Hardwick issues
Cambridge Road
At last the achievement of a Community Solution to a Community Problem! After much lobbying by Fiona and District Councillor Jim Stewart, Andrew Lansley MP and the Parish Council the County Council are going to put forward this road forward for inclusion on the road improvement scheme known as the October List. Fiona explains that “all small and medium road schemes are evaluated on their merits (and accident statistics) and those deemed of merit are added to the October List. Several from that list will then be put forward for budgetary approval for the following year.” But – Fiona needs your help! To give the improvement scheme a fighting chance she needs to hear from as many of you as possible who have been involved in or witnessed accidents here. Please pass them on in written form to Fiona as she is preparing an evidence file to go forward with the application later in the year. “Although we still have a long way to go I’m thrilled to actually see it go forward for evaluation” says Fiona. The problem has been ongoing for 30 years so to get it this far in 4 months is just more proof of how well the community in Hardwick have worked together to solve this problem.
Christmas rubbish collections South Cambs District Council has reviewed its operating schedule for waste collection over the 2008/09 Christmas and New Year period. Over the festive period, collection of domestic refuse and recycling will be as normal, with adjusments for the bank holidays. The final timetable is available on-line (www.scambs.gov.uk), in the South Cambs Magazine and from the Contact Centre. If you have a clinical and/or trade waste agreement you will be notified separately of any changes to the collection rota.
Your district councillor: Jim Stewart
Hardwick is represented at South Cambs District Council by Lib Dem Cllr Jim Stewart. The District Council looks after housing issues, planning, and environmental health.
Jim has represented Hardwick at the District Council for ten years. In his professional life, Jim served as an NHS manager for 30 years, and was the chief executive of a North London health authority prior to retirement. His main interest at the District Council has been in planning; he has served for many years on the planning committee, three of those as vice chairman. He has served also as Vice Chairman of the Council, and is currently Chairman of the District Council. His Chairman’s Charity is Camsight, providing support and resources to the blind and visually impaired. He is also the Council’s representative on the Cambridge County Folk Museum.
Local issues
Jim is keen to see better representation for Hardwick at Cambridgeshire County Council, in particular for traffic issues, and also for better liaison with the police. He says, “In Hardwick we have a long-standing problem with traffic and congestion on Cambridge Road outside the village shop and post office. The Parish Council and I have pressed long and hard to have something done about it, and have proposed several possible solutions, but to no avail so far. Unfortunately, like many places, we have had some anti-social behaviour problems and have been very disappointed by police response. We need a County Councillor with energy and dedication to help lobby our case.”
